The Cooperative Ministry serves thousands each year with Financial Assistance and Empowerment services, all aimed at helping heads of households become self-sufficient. Here are our organization's distinctions:
- The Cooperative Ministry was started in 1982 by five downtown Columbia churches and is today supported by more than 60 religious partners.
- The Cooperative Ministry is debt-free. Of total expenses, 89 percent support program services.
- The Cooperative Ministry provides eight services, including financial empowerment coaching that may also include rent and utility assistance; help with obtaining a GED, license, or certification necessary for a better job; free clothing; free furniture; emergency food boxes and hygiene packs; insurance counseling; and, free income tax return preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Annually, The Cooperative Ministry serves more than 13,000 people in our community with about 15,000 points of service.
